Mines Away : The Significance of US Army Air Forces Minelaying in World War II

By: Major John S. Chilstrom, USAF

Minelaying by the U.S. Army Air Forces (AAF) had to overcome the absence of doctrine, serious questions of service autonomy, and preconceptions about naval and air force traditional roles. Though this initially unappreciated weapon gained considerable acceptance during the years of World War II, mines were not again dropped from aircraft in combat until the Vietnam War. During the Cold War, the U.S. Air Force gave little effort to its collateral maritime missions until concern grew over containing an expanding Soviet naval threat. Today, Air Force capabilities for aerial minelaying and other naval missions remain an important (though little appreciated) means for projecting long-range air power in support of "Global Reach--Global Power."...

The Quest for Relevant Air Power : Continental European Responses to the Air Power Challenges of the Post–Cold War Era

By: Christian F. Anrig, Ph.D.

The author addresses four questions: how have these air forces responded to post–Cold War political uncertainties, how have they operated, how have they responded to new air power thinking, and how have they adapted to the challenges of costs and technologies? He convincingly argues that budgetary provision has not been the most important factor in generating effective air power....

Air National Guard Fighters in the Total Force

By: Joseph E. Lucas; Stuart C. Johnson

The study presents and analyzes the pros and cons of three possible options: (1) increasing active duty manning in all Guard fighter units, (2) increasing active duty manning in only a few select Guard fighter units, and (3) moving most, if not all, of the fighters out of the Guard and into the active duty force. If current trends play out, the US military will benefit from having thought about, discussed, and debated this problem. In their insightful study, Lieutenant Colonels Lucas and Johnson provide a fresh approach to finding a solution....

The Role of US Nuclear Weapons in the Post-Cold War Era

By: Richard A. Paulsen

Major Rick Paulsen's study analyzes the role of United States nuclear weapons in this new, multipolar environment. He begins with a historical look at the role nuclear weapons have played in US defense policy since 1945. He reviews current unclassified guidance and the spectrum of public opinion on where the United States should be going with its nuclear weapons programs . He then surveys the potential threat of weapons of mass destruction. Major Paulsen concludes his study by suggesting nuclear force capabilities that would provide the United States with a viable deterrent for the post-cold war era. His recommendations address a broad range of issues that focus on developing a coherent nuclear strategy....

Anthology of the Paradoxist Literary Movement

By: J. M. Levenard; I. Rotaru

"Anthology of the Paradoxist Literary Movement" is a collection of multicultural essays about the Paradoxist Literary Movement in the world, edited by Jean-Michel Levenard, Ion Rotaru, Arnold Skemer....

I left the totalitarianism and emigrated to the united states for the freedom: Therefore, don't force any literary rules on me! Or, if you do, I'll certainly encroach upon them. I'm not a poet, that's why I write poetry. I'm an anti-poet or non-poet. I thus came to America to re-build the statue of Liberty of the Verse, delivered from the tyranny of the classic and its dogma. I allowed any boldness, anti-literature and its literature flexible forms fixed, or the live face of the death! style of the non-style, poems without verse (because poems don't mean words), dumb poems with loud voice, poems without poems (because the notion of "poem" doesn't match any definition found in dictionaries or encyclopedias)-poems which exist by their absence, after-war literature: pages and pages bombed by filthiness, triteness, and non- poetically, paralinguistic verse (only!): graphics, lyrical portraits, drawings, drafts, non-words and non-sentence poems very upset free verse and trivial hermetic verse intelligible unintelligible language, unsolved and open problems of mathematics like very nice poems of the spirit-we must scientificize the art ...

A Historical View of Air Policing Doctrine Lessons from the British Experience between the Wars, 1919-1939

By: Major Michael A. Longoria, USAF

This paper reviews the historical accounts of the Royal Air Force (R.A.F) experiences in air policing during the interwar period, 1919-1939. It analyzes the evidence from the view of operational doctrine and applies an in-depth look at the basic tenets of R.A.F. air policing campaigns. It seeks to answer the question: to what doctrine did air commanders subscribe? It further analyzes the development of air policing tactical doctrine throughout the interwar period. It summarizes the conclusions and then offers this insight as it may apply to contemporary operations. This work seeks to provide an insightful view of the British experience and attempts to explain what has never been explained before, namely “how” air policing worked from the vantage point of those who conducted it. By tracing the R.A.F. operations during the more significant air policing examples and looking at the indigenous response, it describes the actual operational mechanism at work....

Coalition Warfare : Considerations for the Air Component Commander

By: Major Peter C. Hunt, USAF

This thesis focuses on operational-level coalition air force interactions in three conflicts: the Korean War (1950–53), the Persian Gulf War (1990–91), and the Balkan Air Campaign (1992–95). The capability that coalition air forces offer usually benefits the overall effort, while each member’s diverging desires (or will) can degrade overall unity of effort. Analysis of the three conflicts presented here suggests several coalition considerations for air component commanders. Because each case in this thesis had unique elements that may have affected the coalition, a comparison of these elements may also reveal considerations which are important to the air component commander. Finally, the current US programs to train joint force air component commanders and operational-level staffs show promising trends for improving our ability to operate within a coalition....

Wright Flyer Paper : Transforming Air Force ISR for the Long War and Beyond, Vol. 36

By: Major Michael, Jr. Grunwald, USAF

This paper draws on well-established close air support (CAS) doctrine and organizational models to build new intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) organizational and execution constructs to bridge the gap between theater-level ISR assets and tactical operations. These models bind ISR asset, exploiter, CAOC, and the supported unit through face-to-face interactions and standardized processes that apply across any theater of operations or combatant command....
