In a traditional Hawaiian context, nature and culture are one and the same, there is no division between the two. The wealth and limitations of the land and ocean resources gave birth to, and shaped the Hawaiian world view. This volume, compiled at the request of Scott Atkinson on behalf of The Nature Conservancy, includes excerpts from more than 130 oral history interviews that have been conducted by Kepa Maly over the last twenty-eight years. The interviewees were born between the 1890s to 1950s, and all shared personal knowledge—either in native beliefs, traditions, customs and practices; the locations of, and types of fish caught; or about the changing the conditions of the resources—in Hawaiian fisheries. The early interviews are taken from notes recorded and expanded by Maly as early as 1975, with excerpts from recorded interviews dating from 1996 to 2002. The interviews conducted specifically as a part of this study date from late 2002 to late 2003. All of the formal recorded interviews were transcribed1 and the draft transcripts returned (with the recordings) to the interviewees. Follow up discussions were also conducted in review of the drafttranscripts, and the review process sometimes resulted in the recording of additional narratives with the interviewees, and modifications to the interview transcripts. Following completion of the interview process, all of the participants in the tape recorded interviews gave Maly their permission to include the interviews in this study, and for future reference of the documentation by Maly—some releases were given by signature, and others by verbal agreement. In requesting permission for release from the interview participants, Maly followed a general release of interview records form (Figure 1, at end). The waa, or the canoe, played a very important role in Hawaii's history and traditional lifestyle. When the early settlers migrated from Kahiki to Hawaii, they journeyed by double-hulled canoes (waa kaulua). Upon their arrival, they continued to build and use canoes for work, travel, and play. Having found an abundance of very tall and large koa trees (scientific name: Acacia koa) in the islands, the settlers began the practice of making canoes from single, hollowed-out logs. The resultant "dugout" canoes were distinctly different from the plank-lashed canoes that had carried them from Kahiki. The Hawaiians constructed canoes of various designs and sizes. The design and size of a canoe depended upon its use. Smaller canoes were used for fishing and for traveling around the island. Larger canoes were used for distant trips to other islands. The first edition of The Ahupuaa, published in 1979, was planned and developed by the Kamehameha Schools Hawaiian Studies Institute. It was the first publication undertaken by the institute, which was created in 1978 to consolidate the efforts of Hawaiian studies specialists from several Kamehameha programs. Kamehameha staff members Nuulani Atkins, Hooulu Cambra, Peter Galuteria, Donald D. Kilolani Mitchell, Gordon Piianaia, and Mahela Rosehill cooperated on research and writing. Their efforts were supplemented by Orpha Bernie, who provided clerical support; Fred Cachola, who authorized the project; Grady Wells, who coordinated printing; and Julie Williams, who created illustrations. The idea for this useful teaching text was inspired by a painting of an ahupuaa by Marilyn Kahalewai, who had been a graphic artist at Kamehameha. She painted a colorful picture of an ahupuaa which was used by Hawaiian Studies Institute staff as they visited schools throughout Hawaii.
