Having lived as an experimental ‘artist-at-large’ for the past two decades, I took it upon myself to try my hand at representative oil painting this year. I moved to Florence, Italy, in December, 2012, because I wanted to see how renaissance painters created Beauty on canvas. What I found was that far from being hyperrealist in the execution of their paintings, the Old Masters simply attempted to create Beauty in as realistic a way as was possible. Trompe l’oeil was and is a niche technique. The unitiated often fetishise hyperverisimilitude, believing it to possess the greatest intrin- sic artistic value. But my goal is to create Beauty. This volume is one of the fruits of a project undertaken more than a dozen years ago by the Historical Commission of the Territory of Hawaii and carried on since 1932 by the University of Hawaii. The project called for the preparation of a comprehensive general history of Hawaii based upon a thorough study of original sources. The first volume was published some years ago under the title, The Hawaiian Kingdom, 1778-1854: Foundation and Transformation. The first attempts to establish steam navigation among the Hawaiian islands were made by men engaged in similar enterprises in California; they were part of a much larger movement. The expansion of the United States to the Pacific coast, the extraordinarily rapid settlement of California after the discovery of gold in that region, and the quick rise of San Francisco to a position of importance in the commercial and maritime world deepened American interest in the Pacific region and in the trade of eastern Asia. This led naturally to discussion of the subject of steam navigation in the Pacific. Steamships were soon placed in operation along the American coast, and tentative plans were made for steamship lines to cross the great ocean to Hawaii, to the Orient, and to the British colonies in Australia and New Zealand. Introductory Comment The title of this volume speaks of wisdom, a term defined with difficulty and that links formal learning and knowledge to insight, sometimes of a spiritual nature. This is appropriate. Wisdom is seldom imparted, although paths to it are offered in various sacred and profane writings. In the Judeo-Christian culture in the English language, this is traditionally associated with the Wisdom Literature of the Talmud and the Bible, namely Proverbs, Ecclesiastes and the Song of Songs. Sometimes other books are included, such as those of Job, Psalms and Sirach. Other the fi rst three, my own poor attempts at English poetic versions of the latter two aim to respect the wisdom tradition in modern form. But the first of those three – Proverbs – proved too daunting a task. That is one reason I was very pleased when my old friends Charan and Pakapun moved to preserve some traditional sayings of the Thai culture, and asked if I could offer some similar English sayings.
