INTRODUCTION The regional biomedical information programme was iormally established in 1981 when a working group was convened, composed of national focal points designated by their governments for this programme. The recommendations of the working group for a user-oriented programme were discussed at the thirty-third session of the Regional Committee. As a result, a technical study team was formed to review present and future needs and resources in the Region with a view to identifying areas for the further development of a comprehensive regional biomedical information network .
