Violence against women has long been a major concern for women's hcalth and worncn's human rights advocates. In the last five years it has begun to receive increased attention in the international arena, as a human rights issuc ~ lIdllor e recently as a public hcalth conccrn. 'l'he Platform for Action of the Fourth World Conference on Worncn dcdicatcs onc chapter to violence against women arid makes extensive rccomrncndalio~ls tor action to governments, NCiOs, international agencies and othcrs. WHO recogni~,esth at violcnce against women constitutes a serious health risk to women, their families and their communities and is committed to defining and taking up its rcsponsibilities in the prevention of violence against women and management of' its health consequences. A C:onsultation on Violence against Women held in Geneva from 5 to 7 February 1996 was the first step in this process. C:onsultation participants included researchers, health care providers and women's health advocates active in the lield of violence against women Ii-om several countries, as well as reprcsentativcs from several WIIO programmes.
