The Working Group on Children and Family Breakdown: the Positive Role of Nurses and Midwives, convened by the WHO Regional Office for Europe in collaboration with the Federal Republic of Germany and the Institut fiir Gesundheitssyste~n- Forschung, Kiel, was attended by members of a number of health disciplines, representatives of community groups and journalists from the nursing and popular press. The participants are listed in Annex 2. The purposes of the meeting were to: - supplement the available data and perceptions on the health issues related to family breakdown within the Region; - review the i~nplications of these issues in relation to the health for all targets of the WHO European region; - sensitize health workers and the community to the many aspects of these issues so that they will examine the role of nurses, midwives and the community in the prevention of the ill effects of family breakdo~vn and in the promotion of family health; - encourage discussion about these health issues among the formal and informal health systems and representatives of the community; and
