Which does a sailor love more- shore or sea- is a question long remaining unanswered. Of course shore has its charms but sea also has its many. A good sailor can never answer which he loves the most. Nothing in land can exchange for the pleasantness of pacing the smoothly polished deck and, reclining over the stern, watching the widening foaming wake passing below. The broad expanses, immeasurable distances and unfathomable depths of the ocean, with its dire challenges of wind and wave and rains, are not something scorned by sailors and wished to be got past, but something the mastering of which exults them. ‘Where Lies The Land’ is a very fine sailor’s song from the nineteenth century, written by the gifted British poet Arthur Hugh Clough.
