Would you like a place where larks and bees and linnets well hide you and never shows you out, and wild deer browse above your breast and wild birds raise their brood on you, and after enjoying your smiles of love leave you to your solitude? In the land of death the light of joy never fades and grief does not flow unchecked. The dark walls of death do not shut out and enclose joy for ever. The dweller in the land of death is beyond pleasure and honour and is changed and careless: even if you weep and mourn till your sorrow’s source is dry, the dead in their tranquil sleep will never return a single sigh. So, there shall be no other sound near my love’s lonely mound except the west wind blowing and the murmur of summer streams. ‘My Lady’s Grave’ is an immortal piece of poetry from one of the finest poetesses of England, Emily Jane Bronte, who lived just thirty years from 1818 to 1848!
