Leslie stared at the empty grave for a few seconds, and then looked at Sam. His father’s thick work boots and the knees of his old pants were smeared with mud, and his fingernails were outlined with dark grime. Was this the same man who used to wear a tie and sit in an elegant office filling out crisp white forms for people in business suits? “Doesn’t it bother you at all to be digging graves for people?” There was bitterness in Leslie’s tone. “Why should it?” Sam looked at Leslie squarely, almost defiantly. “Everyone on this planet dies sooner or later—it’s just the flip side of being born. I doubt if it would bother you if I delivered babies for a living.”
